Following the release of KCPE results by Education Minister Hon. Mutula Kilonzo, a wave of emotions swept across the country’s primary schools. The test is rigorous and examines the effort of pupils for an eight year academic period.

There were tears of joy and disillusionment immediately the results were announced. New Light Junior Academy Komarock went into jubilation after emerging number one nationally with a mean 413. Kirinyaga topped the county rankings by scoring a mean of 273 as Mandera tailed with 182.

Three pupils tied in position one countrywide after scooping 430 out of 500.They are Wachira Njomo, Boniface Mwaura, and Joy Kathure Kinoti. Boniface, who is shy, said he always led in his class and that never made him complacent despite not having a strong competitor. Kathure on the other hand hopes to join the prestigious Alliance High School and later on pursue Bachelor’s in Engineering.

West Pokot County toppled many other counties to emerge 10th among Kenya’s 47 counties producing a mean of 263. This was an outstanding performance despite the rampant ills of Female Genital Mutilation, child marriages and discrimination of the girl child in the area.

Mombasa’s Mwingo Academy went into an outcry as results of 47 out of 54 were nullified by Kenya National examination Council prompting the school to take the council to court calling for a remark of the examination.

On a sadder note, a pupil hanged himself in what villagers of Motosiet village in Trans Nzoia County attributed to lose of hope by the boy. The body of Kelvin Gatuhi was found hanging from the roof of his grandmother’s hut to the shock of everyone. The boy who had repeated class 7 and 8 after scoring 187 marks  in 2010 committed suicide after getting 229 marks in the just released results.

Good or worse parents and teachers should exercise a role of counseling children on the possible outcomes of examinations and better still after the outcome.
