And what a year has it been!

The Covid-19 pandemic hit the health, economic and social sectors really hard. And while the short term and long term effects of the pandemic are still uncertain in regards to education, what the pandemic has shown is that the current challenges hindering quality of education and improved learning outcomes need to be addressed urgently.

This year has indeed proven that incorporating technology in solving some of the perennial problems such as education will go a long way in improving both learning outcomes and create new learning pathways for all students across the educational spectrum.

During the course of the year we have been able to achieve a few milestones that we would like to highlight here as we look forward to reaching greater heights in the coming year.

As we close out the year, we would like to look at some of the things we achieved as we move towards achieving our mission of making 50 million learners smarter through mobile technology.

We have over 11.1 million users who have used our SMS platform across Kenya, Ghana, Côte d’ Ivoire and Rwanda with over 2.5 billion messages exchanged on the platform.

In Rwanda, Shupavu2910 reached over 328,000 by December. Having launched in October 2020 in the middle of the pandemic in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, we have seen great interest in students asking questions on Ask a Teacher with over 1.47 million questions asked. We also created a really cool TV show in partnership with Isonga media which you can watch here.

We partnered with World University Services Canada, Lutheran World Federation and Finn Church Aid to support refugee learners in Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei Settlement scheme respectively. We also partnered with Nyanza Initiative for Girls’ Education & Empowerment to help mothers out of school due to early pregnancy get back to school and MRM to support underserved learners in Kibera.

It has been great learning from each of our partners and are hoping to partner with more organizations in 2022 to support more learners in their

We are also very proud to have won Edtech Company of the Year at the Kenya edtech Summit.

We sincerely thank all the parents, students, teachers, partners and the community at large for supporting us throughout the year!

From us at Team Awesome to you and your loved ones, we wish you Happy Holidays!

2021 Edtech Company Of The Year Award

Peter Baraka

Awards

Education in Kenya

Eneza Media

edtech

education

Impact

Shupavu291

Eneza Education scooped the 2021 Edtech Company of the Year award during the Kenya Edtech Summit and Awards held on the 27th of August 2021 at the Movenpick Hotel in ... Read More

Eneza Education scooped the 2021 Edtech Company of the Year award during the Kenya Edtech Summit and Awards held on the 27th of August 2021 at the Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi.

Kenya EdTech Summit & Awards is a premier leading annual professional development Summit and Awards that focuses on technology integration strategies and digital tools to transform education to enrich the lives of learners.

There were a total of 22 award categories ranging from Edtech company of the year, Edtech founder of the year, STEM solution of the year to Higher education technology leader among others.

We are proud to have been nominated in the same category as other leading edtech providers like eLimu, Moringa school, Angaza Elimu, iHub, Fuzu, Funke Science, and Longhorn.

The accolades that we have received continue to inspire us to keep working towards our mission of making 50 million Africans smarter through mobile technology.

A big thank you to everyone who voted for us. Parents and students were left alone to look for alternative ways of learning and this was difficult given that nobody had experienced such a situation before.

In Africa, there has always been a challenge in terms of access to technology based learning and the pandemic made it even harder especially for learners coming from unprivileged backgrounds and those from rural areas to continue with their studies.

Students that were preparing for their KCPE exams had to find a way of revising for the exams without having access to the classroom and their teachers. Though there were efforts made by the government and relevant authorities to make sure that learning did not stop like radio, Tv and cloud based learning were only available to students that had access to these gadgets.

Shupavu291 helped many candidates to prepare for their national exams during the stay at home period and after schools were reopened early this year.

When the KCPE results were announced, the messages of gratitude we received have been quite inspiring.

Here are some of the messages we have received from learners that used Shupavu291 to prepare for the KCPE exams;

“I learned about Shupavu291 in 2020 when schools were closed from my cousin. When I told my mum about it, she bought me a phone to start reading on Shupavu291. I love the revision lessons because they were very helpful as they make you understand a topic before you start doing the questions. Then you would get explanations whether you were right or wrong that would make you understand better. I got 410/500 marks in this year’s KCPE and I am hoping to join a good National school either Alliance girls or Kenya High.I would like to be a Neurosurgeon when I grow up.” Blessing from Hill Springs Academy in Meru County told us.

“Shupavu291 helped me prepare for my exams and was able to score 348/500 marks in KCPE. I did not have access to any revision books or textbooks but through Shupavu291, I was able to access past papers, revision lessons and would even ask the Shupavu291 teachers difficult questions and they would respond. The revision lessons were really helpful because I used to write them down in my notebook and read them later. I used to read everyday after school from 8PM to 10PM. They have very nice explanations that are easy to understand. At times I would ask a question in class and the teacher would tell me to wait or see them later in the staffroom because they did not have the answer. But on Shupavu291, you can ask a question and get your response in minutes. I am very grateful to Shupavu291 and may you continue helping others.” Charles from Rachilo Primary School in Kisumu County

When Education Meets Tech

Peter Baraka

Education in Kenya

EnezaChats

Opinion

#EnezaChat

Balanced Curriculum

edtech

education

education in kenya

enezaeducation

Shupavu291

Edtech has the power to elevate and improve learning outcomes for students by offering various digital alternatives to delivering education. There have been interventions in the past such as radio and Tv to supplement what learners get in the classroom but the rise of edtech companies in the last few years has seen education stakeholders put more focus on creating availability of edtech products as they seem to have a positive impact on learning.

COVID-19 has not only seen the demand for edtech resources increase but also, it has given an opportunity to educators to explore and adopt other ways of learning. Parents, teachers and learners that had not been exposed to edtech tools have now gained access to digital skills that in future will be required to succeed in the labour market.

As schools closed down a few months ago, we zero rated our learning platforms from May 31st to September 30th in partnership with Safaricom to help learners keep up with their studies at home. The stats on content consumed by learners during this period has been very impressive.

As of October 31st, 2,212,802 learners had accessed learning materials on our platform; Shupavu291 with learners using the platform an average of 3 times a week.

Despite the many challenges that learners experience while at home, our data shows that learning can still take place if the learners have access to tools that are within their reach.

A report carried out by GSMA showed that 91% of households in Sub-Saharan Africa have access at least to any phone however any basic it is. For us, this is a great opportunity we leverage on as you only need to have a phone that can send and receive messages to consume our content.

Learners in primary and secondary are able to access comprehensive revision materials in all subjects; from lessons, revision papers and Wikipedia on SMS once they sign up on Shupavu291.

Although challenges like internet access, lack of electricity and price may hinder the progress of edtech companies being made around the continent, the current education crisis has shown that if the right investments are made towards digital education, individualized learning which greatly improves learning outcomes can be achieved.

Introducing Shupavu291 Mock Papers

Peter Baraka

Education in Kenya

Eneza's response to COVID-19

Teachers making a difference with Eneza

Working With Teachers

As learners across the country continue to adjust to the new and different ways of continuing with their learning at home, here at Eneza our commitment to ensure that learning ... Read More

As learners across the country continue to adjust to the new and different ways of continuing with their learning at home, here at Eneza our commitment to ensure that learning does not stop remains to be our motivating factor.

School closures have brought along numerous challenges that pose a threat to the future of many learners, teachers and parents; who in a way are not even able to cope with these challenges. Child labor, child pregnancies and loss of jobs for parents, teaching and non teaching staff and many other in the educational sector.

Through our partnership with Safaricom Plc that began in April, over 2 million learners have been able to receive free revision materials to help them keep up with their learning while at home. Upon registration on our platforms, learners have been able to receive revision lessons, revision papers, Wikipedia and even interact with our teachers by asking any questions on our Ask a Teacher feature.

Candidates in primary and secondary that were to sit for their national exams at the end of the year have now been made to wait for another year to graduate to the next level.

Our goal during this period to ensure that learning does not stop especially for candidates in primary and secondary that were to sit for their national exams at the end of the year. Our content team has developed Shupavu Mock Papers that aim to help the candidates have a feel of how the national exams are set.

The mock papers can be accessed by learners in class 8 and form 4 on the Revision Papers feature once they are registered on Shupavu291 or ShupavuWeb.

To find out more about Shupavu Mock papers, we spoke to one of our Content Associates involved in the creation of these papers to find out why and how the papers will be of benefit to the candidates.

“The Mock exam as the name says, is a practice exam, designed to be as much like the real exam as possible(KCSE and KCPE exams). It is comprehensive meaning that it tests all that has been taught in the previous classes making it beneficial to class 8 and Form 4 students.” said Dalphine who is part of the content team and heavily involved in the curation of the content

“The purpose of the mock papers is to give the student a good idea of what to expect in a typical KCPE/KCSE set up and also, acts as a good indicator of topics not grasped, which might be worth going over again.”

Dial *291# from a Safaricom line to access Shupavu291 click on the link for ShupavuWeb.

Are Students Learning in the Face of COVID19?

Peter Baraka

Edtech Posts

Education in Kenya

Eneza's response to COVID-19

EnezaChats

Uncategorized

After the Ministry of Education announced on Tuesday, July 7th that the 2020 school calendar would be forfeited and that students would be repeating classes come January 2021, the negative ... Read More

After the Ministry of Education announced on Tuesday, July 7th that the 2020 school calendar would be forfeited and that students would be repeating classes come January 2021, the negative impact of this decision on the education system has been and continues to be massive.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted learning for more than 1.5 billion students worldwide with over 18 million of those students being from Kenya.

With the economic effects of COVID-19 already taking its toll on the population, teachers, parents and learners have now been forced to figure out how to compensate for the lost academic year.

There have been different interventions by both government and the private sector to ensure learning continuity by providing alternative learning materials after schools were closed to curb the spread of the deadly virus. Some of the available resources include; radio and television programmes, cloud content, mobile learning etc.

Community based learning programmes have also been introduced that will see the use of public spaces like halls by teachers and learners to continue with their studies.

As much as school closures have disrupted learning for all students in the country, this impact is felt severely by disadvantaged boys and girls and their families especially those from informal urban settlements, hard to reach rural areas and refugee camps.

Learning will continue to be greatly interrupted as long there are no clear guidelines as to when classroom doors will open. For disadvantaged families who rely solely on their children being in school to get an education, they lag behind as most of them do not have access to revision materials and internet enabled devices they can use to learn.

Also, parents do not have the expertise to facilitate their children’s learning at home and this is even worse for those parents with limited access to resources for their children to learn and also those that have limited literacy skills.

For the learners, it is possible that some of them may lose interest in learning when they think of repeating classes in January 2021. It is also going to be difficult for parents to pay school fees for the new calendar year given that there have been layoffs throughout most organisations due to the harsh economic conditions caused by the virus.

At Eneza we partnered with Safaricom PLC to provide access to Shupavu291 SMS based learning for free from April 2nd to August 31st 2020. This has enabled over 1.85 million learners access curriculum aligned lessons, revision papers and also ask questions to teachers via the Ask a Teacher platform. The high number of questions asked to teachers shows that students are still keen on continuing with learning even with the uncertainty of when schools will reopen.

Given that the number COVID-19 infections continue to rise at an alarming rate and no signs of a vaccine being discovered soon, there is an urgent need to support all players involved in the education sector; from teachers, parents, learners and innovators to make sure that our children do not lose interest in their education.

Impact of Ask a Teacher Feature on Learning Outcomes

Peter Baraka

Edtech Posts

Education in Kenya

Eneza's response to COVID-19

Teachers making a difference with Eneza

Testimonials

Working With Teachers

#EnezaChat

edtech

education

education in kenya

enezaeducation

mlearning

Shupavu291

teaching strategies

Despite schools being closed and students not being able to physically interact with teachers, here at Eneza we have been able to facilitate virtual student-teacher interaction via our Ask a ... Read More

Despite schools being closed and students not being able to physically interact with teachers, here at Eneza we have been able to facilitate virtual student-teacher interaction via our Ask a Teacher feature.

The service enables students to send any questions via SMS and get a comprehensive response from a live teacher in 5 minutes. This may however increase if the number of questions shoot up. After we opened up our platform for free in April, there was a huge increase in the questions from students. This has led to our teachers working overtime and we also hired extra teachers to help handle the huge traffic.

Given that students are not only asking academic questions, we talked to our teachers to find out if the Ask a Teacher platform can help to positively influence learning outcomes especially now that schools will be reopening in January 2021 and learners are set to repeat classes.

The teachers noted that students are more comfortable and confident asking any questions on the platform. This usually doesn’t always happen in a normal classroom setting. Some students fear asking questions for the fear of being ridiculed by other students if the question is deemed “stupid.”

“The Ask a Teacher platform bridges the gap that exists between learners and teachers in a classroom situation by inculcating confidence in the learners to ask any type of questions in the hope of getting answers.” said Beldine Achieng, one of the Ask a Teacher responders on the platform.

For Sarah Ndungi she has noticed that learners are now not just asking questions on academics but on current affairs and issues that are affecting them.

“I have realised that students’ questions mostly are based on current affairs. For example when the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Kenya questions related to that flooded the platform. Right now from what is going on on teenage pregnancy there are so many questions related to signs of pregnancy and pregnancy experiences.”

With schools set to be closed down until January 2021, it is likely that some students may have lost interest in their learning since there is no classroom experience. We believe that having a platform such as Ask a Teacher will go a long way in assisting students get answers to their questions from a teacher and also get motivation to learn as they prepare to resume classes in 2021.

Achieving Learning Outcomes Through Edtech

Peter Baraka

Edtech Posts

Education in Kenya

Opinion

#EnezaChat

edtech

education

enezaeducation

Mobile Learning

mobiletechnology

Across the globe, edtech continues to change the possibilities around learning and teaching. It is only a few years ago that classes were restricted to physical lectures, talks and objects; but students and teachers can now have access to a diverse range of a digital toolbox that enables teachers to teach and students to receive online lessons and revision materials.

Education Technology popularly known as Edtech, refers to software designed to enhance teacher-led learning in classrooms and improve students’ education outcomes. Some of the perfect examples of edtech solutions include: AI and Machine Learning, Gamification, Cloud Technology and Mobile Learning.

One of the major challenges that teachers have been faced with for years is being able to provide individual attention to students in a class of many students in a single lesson. With data and AI, teachers are able to understand the learning pattern of each student and tailor the learning experience for maximum efficiency and improvement of learning outcomes of their students.

It is obvious that not all subjects are liked by students in the course of their learning. Some subjects can be stressful and boring to them and this leads to poor performance and attitude towards learning. However, if interaction is applied in this scenario, there can be a positive uptake.

Mobile learning has revolutionized the experience of learning. At Eneza, a direct partnership with an MNO (Safaricom PLC) has put us in a unique position to be able to provide learning materials to millions of users at a significantly reduced cost to them. Our partnership with Safaricom in Kenya enables us to scale our content by utilizing their network and billing API’s.

A subscription to Shupavu291 SMS learning allows the Learner to learn with unlimited messages; allowing them to take as many lessons, quizzes, revision papers or ask questions to teachers using the Ask A Teacher feature.

Kenya leads the way in the continent when it comes to smartphones penetration with 91% of kenyans able to access a phone. Out of the 53.8 million Kenyans, 46.8% have access to the internet according to a research by GSMA. Even though the smartphone penetration is high, internet affordability still remains one of the biggest challenges to internet uptake in the country. This makes it difficult for smartphone owners especially in rural and deep rural areas to miss out on learning via the internet.

From our years of experience since inception in 2013, we believe that SMS based learning levels the playing field when it comes to access to learning materials. All you need to have is a basic 1G or 2G phone.

Edtech has the power to achieve the desired learning outcomes. The challenge is how do we create access to all? At Eneza, we believe delivering the content via SMS is the first step.

Creating Equal Access to Revision Materials for all Students and Candidates in Kenya Through Shupavu291 Revision Papers

Peter Baraka

Cool Edtech Resources

Edtech Posts

Education in Kenya

EnezaChats

Remember

Revision Papers

#EnezaChat

edtech

education

education in kenya

Eneza Education

Mobile Learning

Shupavu291

technology

In Kenya, the academic achievement of primary and secondary students is assessed through the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (K.C.S.E) This examination which ... Read More

In Kenya, the academic achievement of primary and secondary students is assessed through the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (K.C.S.E)

This examination which is offered by the Kenya National Examination Council (K.N.E.C – an organ of the Ministry of Education) is administered to primary school and secondary school students at the end class 8 and form 4 respectively; is crucial as it decides whether the learner makes the step forward or not.

Those in primary, doing well in the examination guarantees them a spot at the best national and county schools in the country and for secondary students, a student needs to score a mean grade of C+ to be admitted into the public universities.

For students to be able to perform well in these examinations, proper preparation ought to have taken place before they sit for the examinations. Good preparation not only ensures that students are less stressed and better prepared but also are likely much better to perform well

Unfortunately, for learners coming from disadvantaged households, this is not the case. High costs of revision materials is the main challenge that students and their parents encounter in their bid to get ready for these important examinations . The average cost of a revision booklet is Ksh 500.

As the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen, students whose parents are not able to afford to buy them revision books end up missing on preparing well for examinations. As a result, stress and anxiety are usually what the students go through in exam rooms hence bad performance.

One of the ways that we are trying to prepare learners for exams is the curation of yearly and termly revision papers available for students learning on our SMS and Web platforms.

Once you sign up on our Shupavu291, we have a feature named Revision papers; that enables students to access unlimited revision papers both for primary and secondary levels. Our main objectives when creating the papers are to: prepare learners for upcoming exams, evaluate what the learners have learnt and to prepare candidates for national exams.

With Shupavu291 past papers, learners can access all revision papers for all class levels making it easier to revise topics that they are not confident about at their own pace. Learners receive feedback to each and every question in bit sized explanations when they answer correctly or wrongly to a question. On top of revision papers, learners can access lessons and quizzes, offline Wikipedia and can also ask questions to our teachers through the Ask a Teacher platform.

There is no better feeling for students than being prepared for upcoming exams, especially when they know they’ve put in the work. Constant revision means much less stress and anxiety, plus it allows students to study at their own pace rather than exhausting themselves with all-nighters a week before the big day.

To access Shupavu291 past pacers reply with REVISE to 20851 or visit http://www.mwalimoo.com/m/start for ShupavuWeb revision papers.

Using Shupavu291’s Ask A Teacher Platform While Learning at Home

Peter Baraka

Education in Kenya

Eneza's response to COVID-19

EnezaChats

Testimonials

#EnezaChat

Balanced Curriculum

edtech

education

enezaeducation

mlearning

Shupavu291

technology

In April we partnered with Safaricom PLC to provide free revision materials for learners in primary and secondary on SMS and Web. This has seen a high increase in the number of learners accessing content and also the number of lessons being consumed on the platform.

During the free period we have been able to reach over one million learners across the country with an average of 300,000 active learners per day.

One of the interesting things that we noticed was a huge spike in the number of questions that were being asked by learners on our interactive Ask a Teacher that enables students to ask questions and receive feedback from our teachers.

Our teachers were receiving an average of 3,000 questions a day in January and have been receiving an average of 20k questions a day since we launched the free service.

We spoke to some of the most active learners using Ask a Teacher feature to find out why it is an important revision tool while they are at home.

Lucy, a form 1 student from Gatero Day Secondary school, subscribed to Shupavu291 after schools were closed down in March. “There are topics that we had not been taught in school before we closed. Anytime I am reading a new topic and do not understand anything, I go Ask a Teacher on Shupavu291 and the teachers help me.” said Lucy.

“I like learning new vocabulary to develop good language skills. Since I do not have a dictionary, I love to use the Ask a teacher feature because I get very detailed explanations to the questions similar to that of the dictionary. Also I can be able to search a topic on Shupavu291 and get revision notes and questions which are helping keep up with my studies.” said Amos a form 3 student from Lodwar boys who has been using Shupavu291 since he was in class 8.
