From content creators to content editors and ‘Ask a Teacher’ respondents for our unique student- teacher interaction feature. The feature enables students to ask difficult academic questions and they get responses on a first come first serve basis.

Working with the teachers ensures that we are always curating and providing quality revision content to learners that use Shupavu291 for individualized and personalized learning.

As an Edtech company, one of our key stakeholders continue to be practicing teachers who are playing a key role in our mission to make 50 million learners smarter in Africa through use of mobile technology.

We work with teachers from both primary and secondary levels. These teachers have been at the forefront in referring learners to Shupavu291 apart from the various marketing campaigns we do.

Teachers have been used to the conventional way of teaching; that is standing in front of a classroom with a chalk or a whiteboard marker with 40 minutes to engrave knowledge and set their students up for success in life.

There are those who also provide private tutoring to students and homeschooling but at the moment, none of these activities can happen due to the novel Covid-19 pandemic. Governments across the world have had to close down learning institutions to curb the spread of the virus.

According to UNESCO, close to 63 million primary and secondary teachers have been affected by school closures in 165 countries due to the Covid-19. .

We managed to talk to some of the teachers that we work with to find out how they are coping with not being in class and on how having a technology that works for all is key during this stay at home period.

“What l love about Eneza Education is that it has given students and adults learners in Kenya a platform to learn , affordably and it is very accessible. Irrespective of their background or whether they have smartphones or not they are treated in equal measure.” said Violet Mwakazi, one of our teachers working as an Ask a Teacher respondent.

“Honestly, it’s emotionally draining not being able to have a clear timeline as to when schools will reopen. I am so worried for my pupils and especially my candidates, who apparently not all are able to access phones or other resources to continue learning.” Added Violet.

Though the schools are closed, it is interesting to find out that teachers are still in communication with their students through the different social media platforms.

Charles Odiwor has been working with Eneza since 2014 and has been busy answering students’ questions through our Ask a Teacher feature and sending assignments and revision materials to his students on Whatsapp groups and Facebook messenger. He however notices that it is only benefiting students with access to smartphones and some of the students are being left out.

On working with Eneza, “Working with Eneza in content creation involves a lot of reading and research on topics one is working on, thus providing learners with comprehensive content to help them when taking quizzes on Shupavu291. Eneza has helped me build my digital skills by working online, typing, being up to date with my emails, google sheets, etc. Through Shupavu291, I believe I have served hundreds or thousands of students whom I could not serve by just teaching in class. I have also been able to interact with other teachers from different schools working at Eneza.”

“Life looks a little different from what has been normal. Staying indoors the whole day without interacting much, especially with my students, personally seems to me like a turn-around on everything that has been my norm. I feel students too are missing a lot and are probably worried if things are ever coming back to normal soon. Thanks to Eneza Education for giving access to revision materials through Shupavu291. I believe it will go a long way to help students cope with the current situation.” said Charles on the current crisis being faced by the educational system due to COVID-19 pandemic.

We are really proud of the teachers who worked with us to develop content and the ones engaging learners on Ask A Teacher. To all the teachers doing the best they can to support learners during this period, we really appreciate you.

To register your learners to Shupavu291 ask them to dial *291# on a Safaricom line or visit http://mwalimoo.com/m/start for ShupavuWeb

CAREER OPPORTUNITY: IGCSE CONTENT CREATOR

Juliet

Featured

Career opportunities

Careers

Content Creators

Eneza Opportunities

IGCSE

Join our team

opportunity

Eneza Education Limited invites applicants who are qualified and experienced teachers in the IGCSE curriculum for the position of part-time Content Creators. It gives them an opportunity to expand their knowledge through interaction with a teacher by asking questions. It saves them the pain of studying at a later time and it is a perfect chance to learn something new as well as get to know what is required in class like assignments or upcoming papers.

Increasing class attendance is essential in the learning process and cannot be avoided by any learning institution. Here are some ways that teachers can use to increase class attendance:

1. Guidelines
Each school should have tight guidelines to manage class attendance. A principle of teachers marking registers of class attendance is one step towards achieving class attendance. That way it is easy for the tutor to track the absentee students and take the necessary actions. To keep attendance in check ,teachers should follow up with parents including writing concern letters to parents over continued absentee behavior among students. Another way is reinforcing consistent school/class sessions attendance by openly congratulating such students. This will also serve to motivate the rest of the class to continually present themselves for classes.

2. Preparation
Teacher preparedness is key to achieving class attendance. Students are sensitive and could look down upon an unprepared teacher. Every lesson should be carefully planned and have an objective or goal. Preparedness ultimately boosts teacher confidence with himself/herself and even among the students.

3. Value addition to Lessons
Diversifying learning activities in a class set up reduces boredom and sparks a measure of interest! Teachers should: allocate time for discussions to increase class engagement. Some students learn more from discussions as compared to lecture sprees. Discussions should not be overdone since they can drift topics into illogical conclusions. Bringing external speakers can boost class attendance. External speakers simply create eagerness among students to attend a lesson. Let the speakers handle topics such as career development where they could relate learning to professional development. Let students see their learning carrying on to dictate on their life after school. Career guidance for learners lights a fire and

a desire for better living! Let them know that their attendance will dictate their professional paths.Teachers can use testimonials to achieve attendance: Inviting a successful alumni to talk to students about studying and how they succeeded can help boost class attendance.

4. Snap measures/Breaking away from the norm
Teachers should be able to employ creative tactics to make lessons enjoyable, which in turn leads to better class attendance. Storytelling is one form of breaking away from the norm, playing brain teaser games like crossword puzzles gets attracts students to class. Tutors can use case studies and audio lessons once in a while to break the monotony of a conventional class. They could also administer unannounced quizzes or base exams after every topic covered.

Academic performance is directly tied to the learning experience. It is therefore paramount that students attend school for learning. The challenge lies squarely on individual teachers’ shoulders: What are you / not doing to keep your students in class?

Inspiring discipline among students

Eneza

Edtech Posts

Education in Kenya

Eneza Media

Featured

Uncategorized

discipline

education

mlearning

punishment

Disciplining a student involves imparting knowledge and skill that is aimed at creating positivity. In order to discipline students, it is very crucial to understand the stages of life that everyone undergoes. A case of disciplining an adolescent is not the same as disciplining a 7 year old. However, some techniques cut across various age groups.

Discipline helps students to stay on track with regard to their goals and also gives them an opportunity to grow as an wholesome person. Life without goals is definitely a sham. Discipline is the safest way to stay focused on the ‘focal point’ of life.

Here are some of the ways that teachers/parents can use to inspire discipline among students:

Counselling
Counselling is key to unlocking hidden potential in a person. Every human being has a potential that is a valuable treasure to them. Through counselling, positive norms are imparted to students to help them achieve the hidden potential. This is just like awakening a giant that is deeply asleep. Counselling puts realism to a person and helps them stay on the path of growth and avoid bad behavior. Negative peer pressure, for example, can cause devastating moral erosion if not checked by a counselor. Each school should have a guidance and counselling department to guide students through the turbulent teen stage as teens can get confused as they struggle to discover themselves.

Praise
Praise is an expression of approval and admiration. Teachers and parents should not hesitate in praising what they see is good. Naturally, every person will be enlightened through praise. It brings an automatic urge to do good and cleanses any forms of evil thinking. It motivates a student and opens him/her to another opportunity to prove goodness.

Withdrawing of Privilege
Withdrawal of privileges works magic in imparting discipline. An example is postponing a field trip for students who have not finished their assignments. This will put them on toes as they try not to miss out of a major fun event. For younger kids, withholding their computer games or a bouncing castle experience until they have reformed on their behavior works in reforming bad behavior.

Restrained Punishment
Ad Hoc ways of punishment should be avoided at all costs. Corporal punishment, for example instills fear and could lead to resistance from the student that will be unhelpful in attaining good behavior. Moreover, teachers should never discipline students in front of their peers as this can lower their self esteem.

As parents/teachers discipline the students, it is always important to remember Haim G Ginott’s quote `Misbehavior and punishment are not opposites that cancel each other-on the contrary they breed and reinforce each other’
