<p>After half a decade of immersing myself in the world of edtech, I have been a witness to the transformative force that technology holds in the realm of education. Its reach extends beyond classroom walls, touching the lives of students, educators, and parents, enabling us to redefine our educational aims and the means to achieve them.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Recall the unforeseen upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The world stood still, with schools shuttered overnight, and a global student body left in limbo. Yet, those who could adapt to this sudden shift, using online platforms like Zoom and Google Meet or many edtech applications, continued their educational journey virtually.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The pandemic underscored a significant revelation &#8211; technology is not merely an adjunct to traditional education but a potent instrument capable of fostering a flexible, blended learning environment, primed for the future.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another profound impact of technology in education lies in its ability to tailor learning experiences. It is accepted that learning rates vary from student to student. Thus, incorporating personalized learning pathways, courtesy of modern edtech solutions, levels the playing field for students who may require a bit more time to understand new concepts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These customized learning tools empower students, offering a comforting alternative when classroom instruction feels overwhelming. For students apprehensive about raising questions in a traditional classroom setting, edtech allows them to interact with live tutors via chatbots in a pressure-free environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, technology has fundamentally transformed the roles of educators and learners. Gone are the days when teachers were the solitary source of knowledge, and students were merely passive recipients of information. Technology has redefined these dynamics, positioning teachers as facilitators rather than mere dispensers of knowledge.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Learners are now actively participating, using technology to gather and analyze information and engage in thoughtful discussions with their teachers. They are no longer solely dependent on their educators, but instead, create and navigate their learning journeys with technology as their guiding light.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Parents, too, play a critical role in their child&#8217;s educational journey. Active participation in their child&#8217;s learning fosters a confident, positive attitude towards education. Technology equips parents with the means to ease this active engagement, from supplying access to educational devices to tracking progress and offering reinforcement when necessary.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In essence, technology has appeared as an indomitable force, revolutionizing education and learning in countless ways. Whether it is learners discovering innovative learning methods, or teachers finding an efficient way to craft instructional material, technology&#8217;s potential in the educational sector is immeasurable.&nbsp;</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We are  excited to announce the launch of our new product Revise na Mwalimoo that will enable class 8 candidates to prepare for their KCPE by accessing 15,000 KCPE practice questions.</p>
<p>Candidates are able to customize their revision by allowing them to filter the questions by subject, year and the topic of their choice. The platform also provides a real time marking scheme to questions completed by candidates on the platform.</p>
<p><a href="https://revise.mwalimoo.com/">Revise na Mwalimoo</a> helps class 8 candidates practice for their KCPE exams by going through KCPE past papers between the years  2000 to 2020.</p>
<p>After creating a user account , the learner will be able to choose the year and the topics that they would like to study, access to past papers at their own preferred time and track their performance after every session completed on the platform.</p>
<p>Revise na Mwalimoo ensures ease of access to KCPE past papers from previous years so as to help candidates familiarize themselves with how the national exams are set. It is very affordable with students having a choice of either pay daily, monthly or yearly.</p>
<p>The pandemic disrupted school calendars heavily and the impacts are still being felt with no specific time being put on when schools and learners will recover from this. For example this year we will be having 4 national exams being undertaken and the school calendars are expected to return to normalcy in January 2023. </p>
<p>With that in mind, exam preparation will be key so as to help learners do well in their national exams. One can only imagine the kind of pressure that schools and learners have been under to complete the syllabus and start revising for exams. </p>
<p>Revise na Mwalimoo will ensure that candidates adequately prepare for their examinations  by giving candidates the freedom to choose how, when and what to practice in order to give them confidence going into the exam room. </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The year 2021 is finally coming to an end. And what a year has it been! </p>
<p>The Covid-19 pandemic hit the health, economic and social sectors really hard. And while the short term and long term effects of the pandemic are still uncertain in regards to education, what the pandemic has shown is that the current challenges hindering quality of education and improved learning outcomes need to be addressed urgently. </p>
<p>This year has indeed proven that incorporating technology in solving some of the perennial problems such as education will go a long way in improving both learning outcomes and create new learning pathways for all students across the educational spectrum.</p>
<p>During the course of the year we have been able to achieve a few milestones that we would like to highlight here as we look forward to reaching greater heights in the coming year.</p>
<p>As we close out the year, we would like to look at some of the things we achieved as we move  towards achieving our mission of making 50 million learners smarter through mobile technology.</p>
<p>We have over 11.1 million users who have used our SMS platform across Kenya, Ghana, Côte d’ Ivoire and Rwanda with over 2.5 billion messages exchanged on the platform.</p>
<p>In Rwanda, Shupavu2910 reached over 328,000 by December. Having launched in October 2020 in the middle of the pandemic in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, we have seen great interest in students asking questions on Ask a Teacher with over 1.47 million questions asked. We also created a really cool TV show in partnership with Isonga media which you can watch <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx_Pp7ZHotc&amp;list=PL5-YGTWQuJFZ-iiLF59ktChqLhyjQtMB6">here</a>.</p>
<p>We partnered with World University Services Canada, Lutheran World Federation and Finn Church Aid to support refugee learners in Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei Settlement scheme respectively. We also partnered with Nyanza Initiative for Girls&#8217; Education &amp; Empowerment to help mothers out of school due to early pregnancy get back to school and MRM to support underserved learners in Kibera.</p>
<p>It has been great learning from each of our partners and are hoping to partner with more organizations in 2022 to support more learners in their </p>
<p>We are also very proud to have won <a href="https://enezaeducation.com/2021-edtech-company-of-the-year-award/">Edtech Company of the Year</a> at the Kenya edtech Summit.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Eneza Education scooped the 2021 Edtech Company of the Year award during the Kenya Edtech Summit and Awards held on the 27th of August 2021 at the Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi.</p>
<p>Kenya EdTech Summit &amp; Awards is a premier leading annual professional development Summit and Awards that focuses on technology integration strategies and digital tools to transform education to enrich the lives of learners.</p>
<p>There were a total of 22 award categories ranging from Edtech company of the year, Edtech founder of the year, STEM solution of the year to Higher education technology leader among others.</p>
<p>We are proud to have been nominated in the same category as other leading edtech providers like eLimu, Moringa school, Angaza Elimu, iHub, Fuzu,  Funke Science, and Longhorn.</p>
<p>The accolades that we have received continue to inspire us to keep working towards our mission of making 50 million Africans smarter through mobile technology.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>School closures in early 2020 across the globe due to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic brought along the greatest disruption to the education system that will take learners time to recover.</p>
<p>Learners, parents and teachers were forced to adapt to new ways of learning and this has not been achieved by all due to many challenges by learners coming from rural and unprivileged backgrounds. </p>
<p>To help learners keep up with their studies, we partnered with Mastercard Foundation to launch our SMS based learning platform in Rwanda. </p>
<p>Learners in Rwanda are able to access curriculum aligned content from revision lessons to quizzes and also  the Ask a Teacher feature that enables them to ask academic related questions to our pool of teachers and receive responses via SMS short code  2910 on MTN and Airtel Tigo networks.</p>
<p>The launch of Shupavu in Rwanda is part of the<a href="https://mastercardfdn.org/covid19-recovery-resilience-program/"> Mastercard Foundation’s COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience Program, </a>which has two main goals. First, to deliver emergency support for health workers, first responders, and students. Second, to strengthen the diverse institutions that are the first line of defense against the social and economic aftermath of this disease.</p>
<p>Since the launch we have seen a steady increase in the number of questions asked by learners on a daily basis. Our teachers have been able to answer over 880,000 questions since October 2020 from over 250,000 students. Learners have also been able to complete over 95,000 quizzes on the platform and this number keeps growing.</p>
<p>Even as schools around the world continue to welcome back learners to resume learning, we believe that blended learning is the way to go. Learners can benefit from edtech resources especially as a supplementary tool from what they are taught in school and also learning institutions can now look at various ways of incorporating tech into their curriculum.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When learning institutions across the globe closed abruptly early March last year, there was a lot of uncertainty and panic on how students would continue with their studies while at home. Parents and students were left alone to look for alternative ways of learning and this was difficult given that nobody had experienced such a situation before.</p>
<p>In Africa, there has always been a challenge in terms of access to technology based learning and the pandemic made it even harder especially for learners coming from unprivileged backgrounds and those from rural areas to continue with their studies.</p>
<p>Students that were preparing for their KCPE exams had to find a way of revising for the exams without having access to the classroom and their teachers. Though there were efforts made by the government and relevant authorities to make sure that learning did not stop like radio, Tv and cloud based learning were only available to students that had access to these gadgets.</p>
<p>Shupavu291  helped many candidates to prepare for their national exams during the stay at home period and after schools were reopened early this year. </p>
<p>When the KCPE results were announced, the messages of gratitude we received have been quite inspiring.</p>

<p>Learners  have found it difficult to continue with their education while at home. Why? Lack of access to revision materials, loss of learning interest, distractions that come with internet access and lack of proper follow up by parents/ guardians while students are home.</p>
<p>With partial learning resuming for learners in class 8 and form 4 in Kenya, there needs to be a structured and clear way of helping students who have been out of school for the major part of the year get back to where they had left before the pandemic hit the country.</p>
<p>Blended learning which involves the use of online learning and traditional classroom methods can go a long way in helping students to catch up with their studies.</p>
<p> This mode of learning reinforces the aspect of personalized learning by combining the best aspects of in-person teaching with technology-based e-learning methods. Learners are able to work at their own pace, thus understanding everything before moving on to the next lesson.</p>
<p>Learners are also able to get support anytime anywhere and this makes it easy for them to continue learning without disruptions.</p>
<p>It is important to note that blended learning does not aim to replace traditional teaching methods but to supplement it. Blended learning is complementary and creates an integrated learning experience for learners to succeed.</p>
<p>Therefore it is crucial for all parties involved to come together and formulate new learning policies to help millions of learners that have been affected by Covid19. Blended learning is one of the new methods that will go a long way to getting our students back on track.<br />

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">The Pandemic has shone a light on logistics and its importance in global supply chains. Similarly, remote education has probably never been as important as today during the COVID crisis we are all facing. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">In most cases, people associate remote learning with online learning. However, today, in Sub-Saharan Africa, mobile internet penetration is growing but still only at 26% of the population according to </span><a href="https://www.gsma.com/mobileeconomy/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSMA_MobileEconomy2020_SSA_Eng.pdf"><span style="font-weight: 300;">GSMA</span></a><span style="font-weight: 300;">. In this context, remote education to be truly inclusive need to be also offline (i.e. not requiring an internet access).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">This is the problem Eneza has been tackling for a couple of years already through an SMS-based education service accessible by all and already adopted by millions of children in Kenya, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire. They also recently launched ShupavuWeb where students can access similar content online.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">In a partnership recently concluded in Kenya between logistics-trucking solution Amitruck and Eneza Education, it was decided to offer truck drivers families an opportunity to also benefit from remote education. Starting today, Amitruck and Eneza will be providing a free </span><a href="https://enezaeducation.com/kenya/#product"><span style="font-weight: 300;">Eneza subscription</span></a><span style="font-weight: 300;"> to the families of all Amitruck transporters that complete at least one delivery on the Amitruck platform by the end of 2020.</span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In July 2020, we partnered with UNESCO and Safaricom Plc to launch a digital mentorship program where learners in high schools interested in </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> interact with mentors who are all pressing professionals via SMS shortcode 40291.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Learners have been able to get information on STEM careers by sending in questions via SMS to 40291, the Ask a STEM Mentor Platform and getting responses. The program has also been running on local TV and community radio stations.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the past 13 weeks, learners have been able to engage with experts ranging from different STEM fields thus giving them the opportunity to familiarize themselves with what it takes and job opportunities in these fields.</span></p>
