In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a game-changer in various industries, and its influence on education is no exception.

The integration of AI in Educational Technology (EdTech) has revolutionized the way students learn, teachers instruct, and institutions operate. From personalized learning experiences to predictive analytics, AI has opened new avenues for enhancing education, and its potential for the future of learning is vast.

One of the most significant impacts of AI in education is its ability to personalize learning experiences. Through adaptive learning algorithms, AI can analyze students’ strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles to tailor educational content and pacing accordingly. This individualized approach not only caters to students’ diverse needs but also fosters greater engagement and understanding. With AI-powered platforms, students can receive real-time feedback, access personalized resources, and progress at their own pace, leading to improved learning outcomes.

Moreover, AI has transformed the role of educators from traditional lecturers to facilitators of learning. By automating routine tasks such as grading assignments and generating lesson plans, AI frees up teachers’ time to focus on more meaningful interactions with students. Additionally, AI-powered virtual assistants can provide instant support to both students and teachers, answering questions, offering guidance, and facilitating communication. This collaborative partnership between humans and AI not only enhances efficiency but also enriches the educational experience for all stakeholders.

Looking ahead, the future of education with AI holds even greater promise. As technology continues to evolve, AI is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges facing education, such as bridging the digital divide, increasing access to quality education, and preparing students for the demands of the future workforce. Through adaptive learning platforms, AI can provide personalized education to students worldwide, regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic status. Additionally, AI-powered tools can facilitate lifelong learning by offering personalized upskilling and reskilling opportunities tailored to individuals’ evolving needs and career aspirations.

Despite the undeniable benefits, some may hesitate to embrace AI in education due to concerns about job displacement and data privacy. However, it’s essential to recognize that AI is not meant to replace educators but to empower them. By leveraging AI to automate routine tasks and enhance teaching effectiveness, educators can focus on fostering critical thinking, creativity, and social-emotional skills—the qualities that set humans apart from machines.

Ultimately, embracing AI in education is not just about keeping pace with technological advancements; it’s about unlocking the full potential of every learner. By harnessing the power of AI to personalize learning, empower educators, and expand access to quality education, we can create a future where learning knows no bounds. As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of education, let us embrace AI as a catalyst for innovation, inclusion, and lifelong learning.

Eneza Education has partnered with the Mastercard Foundation to launch an SMS-based learning platform in Rwanda. The platform will enable students to remain engaged in their studies while waiting for schools to re-open. It will also be used as a revision tool by students to supplement what they learn at school.

The launch of the Shupavu in Rwanda is part of the Mastercard Foundation’s COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience Program, which has two main goals. First, to deliver emergency support for health workers, first responders, and students. Second, to strengthen the diverse institutions that are the first line of defense against the social and economic aftermath of this disease.

The SMS platform will provide access to the ‘Ask a Teacher’ feature where students can ask questions to a pool of teachers and receive responses via SMS short-code 2910 on the MTN network. On the 1st of November, they will also be able to access lessons and quizzes aligned to the Rwandan curriculum via the same short code. The service will be free to students in Upper Primary and Lower Secondary till 31st July 2021. Students will register with their ID number used for accessing REB e-Learning.

“Our Shupavu platform digitizes the local curriculum and makes it available to any mobile phone, however basic. We have had the privilege of serving millions of learners in Kenya, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire and we look forward to serving millions of Rwandese learners too. We hope learners in Rwanda will find our ‘Ask A Teacher’ platform, which will be linked to REB eLearning, to be a valuable study companion at this time,” said Wambura Kimunyu, Eneza Education CEO.

Since mid-March, 3,161,990 students in Primary and Secondary school are currently out of school in Rwanda as part of the social distancing measures that have been put in place by the government due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With uncertainty prevailing about when schools will be able to reopen again, we are faced with a spectrum of children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds falling even further behind in their studies when compared to their peers.

We leveraged the most widely available tools and technologies to support continued learning for those who would otherwise be left behind. Our aim is to complement lessons being broadcast via Radio to students by the Rwanda Education Board.

“While many educational technologies rely on an internet connection, Eneza is fairly unique in its focus on enabling learning via SMS with no data or connectivity requirement. This makes it accessible to the majority of households, including the most vulnerable. We’ve seen how impactful this model has been in Kenya and other countries, and look forward to seeing it support thousands, if not more, of young Rwandans,” said Rica Rwigamba, Country Head, Rwanda at the Mastercard Foundation.

“Since the pandemic began, we have launched several initiatives, including TV and Radio airing lessons, to ensure that students continue to learn while at home. Using low-tech is key to ensuring wide access. Ongoing TV and Radio lessons will be complemented by Eneza education’s SMS-based platform by adding interaction between teachers and students. Furthermore, SMS-based lessons and assessment delivery will support our e-Learning to reach as many students as possible,” said Christine Niyizamwiyitira, Head of Department of ICT in Education at Rwanda Education Board.

About Eneza Education

Eneza Education is an education technology company founded in 2013 that provides learning and revision materials via any phone however basic. Eneza is based in Kenya, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Eneza’s mission is to make 50 million learners in Africa smarter through mobile technology. We believe that any phone can be turned into a classroom and this levels the playing field when it comes to content delivery.

In Kenya, the academic achievement of primary and secondary students is assessed through the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (K.C.S.E)

This examination which is offered by the Kenya National Examination Council (K.N.E.C – an organ of the Ministry of Education) is administered to primary school and secondary school students at the end class 8 and form 4 respectively; is crucial as it decides whether the learner makes the step forward or not.

Those in primary, doing well in the examination guarantees them a spot at the best national and county schools in the country and for secondary students, a student needs to score a mean grade of C+ to be admitted into the public universities.

For students to be able to perform well in these examinations, proper preparation ought to have taken place before they sit for the examinations. Good preparation not only ensures that students are less stressed and better prepared but also are likely much better to perform well

Unfortunately, for learners coming from disadvantaged households, this is not the case. High costs of revision materials is the main challenge that students and their parents encounter in their bid to get ready for these important examinations . The average cost of a revision booklet is Ksh 500.

As the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen, students whose parents are not able to afford to buy them revision books end up missing on preparing well for examinations. As a result, stress and anxiety are usually what the students go through in exam rooms hence bad performance.

One of the ways that we are trying to prepare learners for exams is the curation of yearly and termly revision papers available for students learning on our SMS and Web platforms.

Once you sign up on our Shupavu291, we have a feature named Revision papers; that enables students to access unlimited revision papers both for primary and secondary levels. Our main objectives when creating the papers are to: prepare learners for upcoming exams, evaluate what the learners have learnt and to prepare candidates for national exams.

With Shupavu291 past papers, learners can access all revision papers for all class levels making it easier to revise topics that they are not confident about at their own pace. Learners receive feedback to each and every question in bit sized explanations when they answer correctly or wrongly to a question. On top of revision papers, learners can access lessons and quizzes, offline Wikipedia and can also ask questions to our teachers through the Ask a Teacher platform.

There is no better feeling for students than being prepared for upcoming exams, especially when they know they’ve put in the work. Constant revision means much less stress and anxiety, plus it allows students to study at their own pace rather than exhausting themselves with all-nighters a week before the big day.

To access Shupavu291 past pacers reply with REVISE to 20851 or visit http://www.mwalimoo.com/m/start for ShupavuWeb revision papers.

MPrep (now Eneza Education), was founded in 2011 by Kenyan teachers and educators keen on making technology useful for their students. The idea came about due to a lack of quality engaging revision material for students in rural areas where textbooks are expensive and obviously non-interactive.

Co-Founders

Toni Maraviglia, one of our co-founders was a teacher who spent her initial time, in Kenya in a rural village, for a year. During her stay in Muhuru Bay, she taught students and teachers as part of a programme with the non-profit WISERBridge. Her students had no library where they could conduct their research so she would engage her students with a system of revision flashcards which promoted great peer learning and collaboration among learners and teachers. Despite this method, it was hard to ensure everyone participated in this system. One student, Daniel in class 7 failed his KCPE exams despite the tutoring and tools he had access to from the programme.

Eneza Education: Shupavu291 Launch- from left to right (Safaricom’s CEO, Bob Collymore, three pupils using Shupavu291, Toni Maraviglia, Kago Kagichiri & Caroline Mutoko.

Kago Kagichiri, our other co-founder developed his first mobile chat room at the age of 14. He took an unpaid staff position as supervisor of the computer lab while in high school at Starehe Boys’ Centre & School. Kago joined Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology and was a top student in his degree for two years running. He felt trapped by a system that seemed to promote rote learning even at the university level and held him back “from acquiring more knowledge”, and so dropped out in his second year.

In October 2011, Kago & Toni met through the iHub, one of Africa’s first tech hubs in Nairobi. They co-founded MPrep. Toni’s teaching experience and love for the classroom, together with Kago’s love for technology and acquiring practical knowledge, allowed them to develop content aligned lessons and assessments on mobile phones, delivered by SMS (text message), to help students learn even in the most marginalized areas of Africa.

In 2012, mobile penetration in Kenya was 69% according to GSMA Sub-Saharan Africa Mobile Observatory 2012. One common thing that was available even in the rural village were mobile phones. Toni conducted a survey in which 90% of the children at Mahuru Bay, despite a lack of electricity for all, had access to a mobile phone.

Our co-founders were brought together by a belief that all children are entitled to equal access to affordable education. SMS was the best way to provide literacy to learners at scale. It made sense to use the readily available simple technology – these mobile “dumb” phones- to give access to localized learning content aligned to the national curriculum. Eneza continued to prove the value proposition for SMS based, bite-sized lessons, assessments and real-time feedback through their study tool.

The content on the platform was developed by the collaboration of practicing teachers from all over Kenya to create the content for Eneza’s initial Class 7 and Class 8 study tool. In mid-2012, they partnered with Safaricom to deliver a low-cost solution where students paid a fraction of the cost for SMS messages to access learning. They also provided data to parents and teachers for purposes of monitoring student performance. This mutually beneficial partnership allowed Eneza to revise their mission to Making 50 million rural kids in Africa smarter.

Impact study

In 2013, Eneza implemented an internal 3-month long impact study among pilot schools showed an improvement of at least 15% compared to the previous year. They learned that the platform fostered more confidence, knowledge retention and collaborative learning among students where some used the same phone to study in groups. Students studied more thanks to Eneza Education.

The number of students learning on the platform grew rapidly but because they were still being charged per SMS, students who had high engagement couldn’t afford the platform. In 2014, Eneza Education created a new product with Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunication network to provide learning at a fixed weekly cost of $0.10 to access unlimited messages and content for 7 days. At the same time, the SMS/USSD study tool was rebranded to Shupavu291 (‘shupavu’ means champion).

Apart from providing learning content through SMS/USSD, Eneza Education also provided multi-device learning platforms like the desktop web, mobile web, Android app and chatbots (Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger) to diversify accessibility to different learners, even though 99% of users still access Shupavu291 via SMS (text message).

Incubations & Investments

At inception, Eneza was part of the first cohort of startups that were incubated at the Nailab, a business incubator offering an entrepreneurship programme focusing on growing technology-driven ideas. Eneza has since got leadership and growth support from prestigious fellowships like Echoing Green, The Unreasonable Institute, Girl Effect Accelerator, and Bluhm Helfand Social Innovation (BHSI).

Eneza Education has enabled students like Imelda, Erastus, Maclus, and Isaiah to access affordable study material through simple phones. With over 4.9 Million learners, Eneza is now the largest virtual classroom in Africa. In March 2018, Shupavu291 was the best mobile innovation for education in the Global Mobile Awards.

Day of the Girl has been observed on 11 October since 2012. This day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. the 2018 theme is ‘With Her: A Skilled GirlForce’. Hence our highlight of organizations that do great things to keep girls in school.

Educating a girl means that as a woman, she is empowered and more likely to participate in development efforts and in political and economic decision-making. Before we look at organizations contributing to girls’ education, let’s look at the statistics about girl child education in Africa. Girls’ enrolment to secondary school remains lower than that of boys, with a Gender Parity Index (GPI) of 0.97. The gap is significant in countries such as Angola(22% for boys/20% for girls), Eritrea (30%/20%), Ethiopia (30%/23%), Malawi (25%/23%), Somalia (9%/5%), and Zambia (38%/35%).

The girl of today’s generation is preparing to enter a world of work that is being transformed by innovation and automation. Educated and skilled workers are in great demand. Roughly a quarter of young people – most of them female – are currently neither employed or in education or training. Poverty is the main factor undermining girls’ right to education. School fees and additional costs such as transport, clothing, and books reinforce the gender gap. When poor families cannot afford to educate all their children, it is often their daughters who have to stay home until they get married. It is under this premise that we highlight the following organizations contribute to the girl child education on this International Day of the Girl.

Plan International

Child marriage is a violation of girls’ fundamental human rights to health, education and a life free from abuse. The practice robs girls of their opportunity to realize their full potential. Plan International runs different programs globally, fighting the vice of child marriage, hence enabling girls to stay in school.

Shofco

Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is a grassroots movement that catalyzes large-scale transformation in urban slums by providing critical services for all, community advocacy platforms, and education and leadership development for women and girls. Started in 2004 by Kenedy Odede and Jessica Posner Odede, SH run several development projects, among them being the Kibera School for Girls. SHOFCO recently received the 2018 Hilton Humanitarian Award.

Akili Dada

Akili Dada provides comprehensive high school scholarships to girls aged 13-19 years and seed funding for social change initiatives led by young women aged 18-35 years. They provide leadership development, mentorship, and skills development for young women and girls.

ZanaAfrica

ZanaAfrica Foundation supports adolescent girls in Kenya to stay in school by delivering reproductive health education and sanitary pads. Lack of Menstrual hygiene products has been directly linked to a high risk of sexual activity at a young age. In fact, 10% of all transactional sex among adolescent girls in Kenya is for sanitary pads. Two in three girls in Kenya lack access to sanitary pads and reproductive health education and 60% of the girls drop out of secondary school. Their social impact business arm, Zana Africa Group manufactures and distributes the low-cost Nia sanitary pads to ensure girls stay in school.

WUSC

World University Service of Canada (WUSC), along with Windle Trust Kenya (WTK), is running a program to help marginalized girls and boys in northern Kenya. They are improving the access to and quality of education in four target communities; the Dadaab refugee camps and surrounding host communities of Fafi, Waji South and Dadaab, and the Kakuma refugee camps and their surrounding host communities in Turkana West. WUSC is building girl-friendly school environments; providing targeted support to female learners; and parent and community support for girls’ education.

Eneza Education

International Day of the Girl would not be complete without highlighting the work we do in removing the literacy barrier. We provide quality education through simple mobile phones. We have partnered with organizations that provide education to girls. Our SMS/USSD Mobile Learning platform is easily accessible because of its simplicity. Reaching over 5 Million learners in three countries; Kenya, Ghana and Ivory Coast. Our goal is making Africa Smarter through mobile phones. You can learn on the platform by dialing *291# from any Safaricom phone for only two Kenya shillings a day.

Our CEO, Kago Kagichiri said that this nomination just confirms that simple technology solving unshiny problems at scale is what emerging markets really want, and need.

He added: “We are launching more products with our telecom partners that solve access to learning, career-determination and socialization problems our rural youth really struggle with, not telling them what content they need to consume in this rapidly changing information landscape. Our upcoming Shupavu MWeb is not just about placing fancier smartphone content in young Africans’ hands, but showing the potential to use the internet to hack their daily lives and make smarter decisions.”

Shupavu291, the nominated product, is Safaricom and Eneza Education’s virtual classroom available on any mobile phone. Through USSD/SMS, the most basic of dumb-phones can provide interactive chat-based lessons and assessments for primary and secondary school youth in Kenya, sessions with local tutors, gaming and competitions on a national level and even access to internet resources like Wikipedia without an internet connection.

“Beyond providing tools to do their daily learning, the future of learning and work for this generation of leaders is self-directed and involves bringing what you can to solve the world’s problems. Our dream is already being realized with 11 year olds leading unsupervised study groups in their neighbourhoods. We’re already living in the new world where young people also have the chance to collaborate and create social value thanks the dedicated team at Eneza.”

Are you a data scientist looking for a new challenge? How do you fancy making 50 million kids in rural Africa smart? We just have the right opportunity for you here at Eneza Education.

Started in 2012, Eneza Education is a comprehensive virtual tutor available on any mobile phone, tablet, or laptop. You can access our platform on USSD, SMS, mobile web, desktop, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram. Our mobile platform provides universal access to affordable, quality, lifelong learning. With 2.4 million unique users on our platform, we are undoubtedly Africa’s #1 Mobile Learning Platform for 10 – 25-year-old learners in rural areas.

So what do all these learners do on our platform? We provide lessons & assessments with individual feedback, Ask-a-Teacher personal tutoring, offline Wikipedia search and dictionary reference, and the ability to compete with friends and peers. We recently started offering African literature (Folktales, Riddles, and Proverbs) on our platform and the response has been overwhelmingly good. And that is just the beginning!

We are looking for a Data Scientist who will help us discover the information hidden in vast amounts of data, and help us make smarter decisions to deliver even better products. The data scientist’s primary focus will be in applying data mining techniques, doing statistical analysis, and building high-quality prediction systems integrated with our products.

What data will you be dealing with? As of 3rd of August we had:

2.4m unique learners on the platform

~160k active users per month

13.3m quizzes completed, 61m questions taken

393k AAT questions taken

529m messages exchanged

Your first challenge

So what are some of the key things we expect you to start out? The first item on the agenda would be to help us understand what our users say and the intent they have. Unfortunately, literacy levels are still quite low in the markets we serve and consequently, we get many messages that we can’t easily decipher. An example of what we get from our users is “DONTGI ME DFFICULT Q SAWA?”. Another – “can we pliz councel the subject? i want to ask a question”. This would be an opportunity for you to dazzle our users (not us) with you NLP and sentiment analysis skills (not written by a data expert so it might actually not be those skills). There are many more interesting challenges that will keep you busy and excited!

What we already have in place

You won’t be starting from scratch as this is a journey we started a while ago. We just need someone to accelerate it. We already have the following in place:

A product management framework – we use the Startup Pirate metrics (Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, Revenue). This allows us to focus on the journey our customers take

A product analytics tool – we use the marvelous Mixpanel to get quick insights from our data. A lot of the analysis you will be doing will be building upon this

An experiment framework – we are firm believers of the Lean startup and we use the Build-Measure-Learn feedback loop to quickly test and improve our platform.

Assist – this is the first version of Eneza’s AI. Build on wit.ai, it has allowed us to automatically resolve a fair share of user challenges. We hope to evolve it into a full student assistant.

A supportive team that understands the difference data can make for our product

Interested? Check out the full job description.
