The use of technology in various sectors of the world economy is spreading like a wild bushfire across the world. In the education sector alone, techies are having sleepless nights in trying to develop seamless solutions to improve the quality of Education in our planet.

20 years ago, no one would have imagined the extent to which technology would impact the socio-economic environment in our world. Africa is experiencing a metamorphosis in technology. Various hubs have been formed in leading cities to quench the thirst for technological solutions. I-Hub, M-Lab and Nailab in Kenya’s capital Nairobi are some of hubs that have paved way for the most unique applications in the education industry.

Kytabu is a textbook subscription app that runs on an Android app. Tonee Ndungu’s Kytabu allows users to purchase books on an hourly, weekly or yearly basis using data bundles. The user can purchase a whole book, a topic of a book or even a chapter. Build on massive encryption capabilities, it is virtually impossible to steal data. Data can also be purchased in dongles that are neither editable nor transferable.

Eneza Education is an indomitable lion in providing revision quizzes to students through simple mobile technology. Eneza’s platform allows a student to revise thousands of quizzes at the most affordable cost. The student is only required to prompt the system by dialing *851# on a safaricom line or texting the word START to 20851. Upon completing registration, the student is free to take as many quizzes as possible.

Eneza allows them to take randomized quizzes, select quizzes from a subject they wish to revise or search quizzes from a topic they wish to revise. The cost of sending a choice answer is Ksh 0.5 and feeback is absolutely free. The feedback gives an individualized explanation about each question.

Eneza Education is a social venture with a mission to make 50 million students in rural Africa smarter. Eneza also provides a web version revision tool, tutorials to poor performers and teacher tips.

This is the future of education!

Time management is the act of planning consciously for your time on particular activities. Time wasted is never recovered and therefore a student should be serious in planning and organization of his/her schedule. Poor preparation for examinations is a leading cause of failure and directly proportional to the time taken for revision. Students need to jealously keep track of their time to derive maximum value from it.

Some of the ways that students can use to manage their time effectively include:

Prioritizing tasks

It is important to set goals on a short-term and long term basis so as to put the highest emphasis on high priority areas first. A student should refuse to be dragged into the habit of postponing activities especially small tasks that would have been dispensed in a relatively short period of time. A-B-C rating system is the best way of prioritizing tasks, with A being the highest priority task and C being the least priority activity.

Quantifying Tasks

Quantifying tasks is simply classifying the small and big asks to ascertain which task will be accorded more weight for example, visiting the library to complete an assignment could be the small task while revising for the exams could be the big task.

Avoid Overload

Breaks are necessary in any reading session. This helps to refresh the mind and improve grasping of material read. The breaks can be relaxation sessions or general socializing with peers.

Set a Vision/ Have a flexible Schedule/Attitude

It is important to outline visions clearly rather than doing any activity blindly. The schedule should be pliable enough in case of an unprecedented activity for example an impromptu meeting with a teacher . Moreover, students should cultivate a positive attitude towards using time wisely.

Get and use a Calendar

A calendar is the best planner for a student. It is the best way of chronologically managing all the study and break sessions of students. A calendar allocates sufficient time to each particular activity Be a Pen’s Friend This seems to be funny but it just means you have to jot down all activities that of your day since one cannot remember everything he/she wishes to do. A student could use sticky notes or a diary to record major activities like when to do laundry, when to call parents and even the time to go to sleep.

Let the wisdom of planning for our time start now!

Absenteeism in school is the habit of staying away from school without providing a genuine or any reason for not attending classes. Absenteeism is a truant behavior that negatively affects the performance among students.

Causes of Absenteeism

Absenteeism is caused by many factors as such as:

1. Phobic Adolescence: During this stage in the growth of a teen, there is a lot of fear developed as a result of physical changes of the body for example growth of pimples, turbulent emotions e.t.c. This scares teens away from school.

2. Lack of Interest: Students could be lacking interest in the study, which could be as a result of content that is difficult for them to grasp hence pushing them away from school.

3. Teacher approach: The approach used by teachers may not be understood by the student and this could lead them to lose interest in school. Punitive attendance policy plays a big role in absenteeism too.

4. Pamperness from the family: Students who get excessive pocket money from their families are most likely to absent themselves from school since they need time to spend the money.

5. Private Couching: Flexible private couching encouraged by some parents could drive a number of students away from the conventional school timetable.

6. Diseases: Some diseases like asthma which requires attention and care as well as an environment that is warm and not dusty could make students remain home.

7. School Infrastructural Facilities: Lack of libraries, sports facilities is a hindrance to attendance of school among students.

8. Entertainment: Accessibility of entertainment facilities like cinemas could divert attention of some students from school.

Absenteeism can lead to depression and also result in poor quality of education as a result of time lost while being away from school. It could also lead to moral degradation that leads to drug abuse, early pregnancies and unruly behavior.

Absenteeism can be remedied by providing adequate co-curricular activities to students. It could be curbed by creating of clubs and societies to keep students busy when they are out of class. Schools should strive to have up to date learning facilities like libraries as well as sporting facilities to make students enhance student retention.

When Anne Bholene Akinyi Odera-Awuor, Ed.M.’13, boarded a plane in Nairobi last September, she left behind a busy life as an English and education lecturer in her native Kenya. Ahead was a year’s study at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, “a really high platform, a place of respect,” she said — all the more so because it would help her grand plan to change how schools operate in Kenya. Read more about this on the Havard Gazette

One of the roles of a teacher is being a moral educator to the students. Morals are not taught in the curriculum but it is an obligation of every reasonable adult to impart good morals kids. Morals are standards of behaviour or that defines the good and the bad. The perennial strikes by teachers in third world countries are negatively impacting on good morals of students during this period. Kenya has experienced a series of teacher strikes since the year 1997 over salaries and allowances. It is a pity when innocent kids miss out on crucial lessons as a result of repeated strikes by teachers. It is natural for every kid to behave well under supervision from an adult.

As the strike continues, students are engaging on several activities that parents may not be able to monitor since they are at work places whole day. Children love play and when left alone, it is obvious that they could overdo it causing unexpected harm to their bodies. Safety of kids should be adhered to by teachers and parents at all times avoid incurrence of unnecessary medical expenses for injuries from uncontrolled pay.

As the saying goes, “Bad Company ruins good morals.” During strikes, students could find themselves associating with peers with bad morals. Not all kids get a proper upbringing at their homes. When students are back home during the strikes, they interact interact freely with peers in their neighbourhoods since they have a lot of free time at their disposal. Students could engage in drug abuse, child sex, bullying, dishonesty and other vices during these interactions. These are just but a few destructive behaviours that damage proper learning.

Other Damages to Students

1. Child Labour

When students are back at home, parents could subject them to chores in the farms so as to supplement family income. This may go unnoticed hence children suffer both psychologically and physically.

2. Time wastage

Time wasted can never be recovered. A lot of study time goes to waste due to strikes. The time planned for coverage of the intended syllabus cannot be recovered which puts students under pressure to study on their own without the teacher’s guidance.

3. Negative Performance

Failure to study under a strict timetable can lead to poor performance in examinations. As a result of this, careers can be destroyed at a tender age.

4. Strained Budgets by Parents

Fees paid for tuition of the students is never refunded or reimbursed to the parents, neither is it carried forward to the next term of study. Parents have to incur extra costs on private tuitions for their kids in the quest to try to fill the gaps created by the strikes.

In a nutshell, teacher strikes damages to a large extent the learning by students. It is important that goverments and teacher unions become sensitive to the innocent children who are uttimately the future of our great world.

Use Eneza Education to study during this strike period. Just dial *851# on Safaricom Line and hit send to get started.

When Toni jetted into Kenya, little did she know that an idea of mobile phone innovation for learning would happen sooner than anticipated. Starting her work from Muhuru Bay in Nyanza, west of Kenya, Toni was determined to improve the system of learning in an unfamiliar territory. The community there faced challenges of malaria infection and poverty but that did not deter an idea whose time had come. From the rural areas of Nyanza, Wajir and Mombasa, Toni mobilized teachers and this led to the birth of MPrep, an assessment-based platform that gives an individualized feedback and high level of engagement. Two years later, the company is moving to another level.

In a week’s time, MPrep will change its name to Eneza Education Ltd in an elaborate ceremony to take place at MM Chandaria Primary School in Baba Dogo, Nairobi. We shall have a refreshing website as well. This will mark a new dawn for MPrep, which is popular in Kenya’s capital city schools. The lead partner in the national launch is Safaricom, Kenya’s Telecom Company known worldwide for its mobile money transfer service, MPesa. Eneza seeks to spread its wings across Kenya and later to the other East African countries. The major aim of Eneza is to provide quality education resources to students, teachers and parents across its network.

Eneza provides a platform for revision by students in Kenya. It runs on web, USSD, mobile web and SMS which is accommodative for everyone with any kind of phone be it the simple feature phone, java phone or smart phone. A student who wants to register for Eneza has to text the word START to the short code, 8512, and follows the subsequent instructions. Our USSD is *851# and will be live any time before the launch.

With the ever-rising population in the third word, Eneza comes as a timely problem solver to education matters. Teachers are overstretched in these countries whereby they attend to over 50 students per class. This is a tall order for them since they do not attend to student individual needs. Eneza therefore provides quality and engaging content to the students at a low cost that is accessible and affordable.

By 2014, we aspire to enroll 200,000 students to our platform and further improve their performance by 20% in 2016. Furthermore, our stakeholders will continually get valuable data reports through our robust system. Click on this link to view an Info graphic of what Eneza is. We look forward to an exciting week ahead!
