Students will engage with tutors through programmes on local TV and community radio stations and also by asking and receiving any questions about STEM subjects via the interactive Ask a STEM mentor Platform on the shortcode 40291.

Being part of a project that engages STEM mentors was very interesting to us as it seeks to provide answers to secondary school students who are looking to enter into STEM careers. Both male and female students are given an equal chance to listen to presentations by the mentors via TV and radio programs. After, they get to ask questions related to STEM subjects and careers by sending the word MENTOR to 40291 and asking questions on the Ask a STEM Mentor platform.

The Ask a STEM Mentor platform was inspired by our feature on Shupavu291 where students interact with our teachers by asking academic related questions. This has become popular since March as schools were shut down and students do not have access to teachers.

Learners in disadvantaged families who do not have access to smartphones and internet also get to interact with mentors because the platform is available via SMS. This creates equal access to mentors for students whether they are in Turkana or Nairobi.

Find the full press release here

Creating Equal Access to Revision Materials for all Students and Candidates in Kenya Through Shupavu291 Revision Papers

Peter Baraka

Cool Edtech Resources

Edtech Posts

Education in Kenya

EnezaChats

Remember

Revision Papers

#EnezaChat

edtech

education

education in kenya

Eneza Education

Mobile Learning

Shupavu291

technology

In Kenya, the academic achievement of primary and secondary students is assessed through the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (K.C.S.E) This examination which ... Read More

In Kenya, the academic achievement of primary and secondary students is assessed through the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (K.C.S.E)

This examination which is offered by the Kenya National Examination Council (K.N.E.C – an organ of the Ministry of Education) is administered to primary school and secondary school students at the end class 8 and form 4 respectively; is crucial as it decides whether the learner makes the step forward or not.

Those in primary, doing well in the examination guarantees them a spot at the best national and county schools in the country and for secondary students, a student needs to score a mean grade of C+ to be admitted into the public universities.

For students to be able to perform well in these examinations, proper preparation ought to have taken place before they sit for the examinations. Good preparation not only ensures that students are less stressed and better prepared but also are likely much better to perform well

Unfortunately, for learners coming from disadvantaged households, this is not the case. High costs of revision materials is the main challenge that students and their parents encounter in their bid to get ready for these important examinations . The average cost of a revision booklet is Ksh 500.

As the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen, students whose parents are not able to afford to buy them revision books end up missing on preparing well for examinations. As a result, stress and anxiety are usually what the students go through in exam rooms hence bad performance.

One of the ways that we are trying to prepare learners for exams is the curation of yearly and termly revision papers available for students learning on our SMS and Web platforms.

Once you sign up on our Shupavu291, we have a feature named Revision papers; that enables students to access unlimited revision papers both for primary and secondary levels. Our main objectives when creating the papers are to: prepare learners for upcoming exams, evaluate what the learners have learnt and to prepare candidates for national exams.

With Shupavu291 past papers, learners can access all revision papers for all class levels making it easier to revise topics that they are not confident about at their own pace. Learners receive feedback to each and every question in bit sized explanations when they answer correctly or wrongly to a question. On top of revision papers, learners can access lessons and quizzes, offline Wikipedia and can also ask questions to our teachers through the Ask a Teacher platform.

There is no better feeling for students than being prepared for upcoming exams, especially when they know they’ve put in the work. Constant revision means much less stress and anxiety, plus it allows students to study at their own pace rather than exhausting themselves with all-nighters a week before the big day.

To access Shupavu291 past pacers reply with REVISE to 20851 or visit http://www.mwalimoo.com/m/start for ShupavuWeb revision papers.

Using Shupavu291’s Ask A Teacher Platform While Learning at Home

Peter Baraka

Education in Kenya

Eneza's response to COVID-19

EnezaChats

Testimonials

#EnezaChat

Balanced Curriculum

edtech

education

enezaeducation

mlearning

Shupavu291

technology

In April we partnered with Safaricom PLC to provide free revision materials for learners in primary and secondary on SMS and Web. This has seen a high increase in the number of learners accessing content and also the number of lessons being consumed on the platform.

During the free period we have been able to reach over one million learners across the country with an average of 300,000 active learners per day.

One of the interesting things that we noticed was a huge spike in the number of questions that were being asked by learners on our interactive Ask a Teacher that enables students to ask questions and receive feedback from our teachers.

Our teachers were receiving an average of 3,000 questions a day in January and have been receiving an average of 20k questions a day since we launched the free service.

We spoke to some of the most active learners using Ask a Teacher feature to find out why it is an important revision tool while they are at home.

Lucy, a form 1 student from Gatero Day Secondary school, subscribed to Shupavu291 after schools were closed down in March. “There are topics that we had not been taught in school before we closed. Anytime I am reading a new topic and do not understand anything, I go Ask a Teacher on Shupavu291 and the teachers help me.” said Lucy.

“I like learning new vocabulary to develop good language skills. Since I do not have a dictionary, I love to use the Ask a teacher feature because I get very detailed explanations to the questions similar to that of the dictionary. Also I can be able to search a topic on Shupavu291 and get revision notes and questions which are helping keep up with my studies.” said Amos a form 3 student from Lodwar boys who has been using Shupavu291 since he was in class 8.

Kenyan teacher, Peter Tabichi wins 2019 Global Teacher Prize

Juliet

Education in Kenya

edtech

education in kenya

Global Teacher Prize 2019

Juliet Otieno

Peter Tabichi

technology

Peter Tabichi won this year’s Global Teacher prize at the Global Education Skills Forum. If that is anywhere near accurate, that equates to some 420 million people who are considered to have a damaging behavioral problem with their internet habits.

Technology and internet addiction is a real and genuine problem and these sorts of numbers strongly suggest that it needs to be recognized as such so that something can be done to address this growing issue.

Different name but same symptoms

A good starting point when talking about internet and technology addictions is to point out that there are striking similarities with the symptoms displayed by people suffering from any other sort of completely unrelated addiction.

Issues with substance abuse and alcohol, for example, have been widely documented and there are plenty of studies and support networks established to try and help people face their addiction problems in these specific areas, but internet addiction is still something we are coming to terms with, which makes it challenging for someone who may have been affected.

China is an interesting and perhaps surprising leader in this arena but they were amongst the first countries to officially recognize internet addiction as a clinical disorder.

The Chinese government has even taken the drastic step of establishing a series of boot camps across the country where teens are sent in order to break their internet addictions. That is unlikely to be the approach taken in most other countries but it does offer a clear indication that the symptoms are significantly similar to other addiction problems and therefore, need to be treated with the same degree of seriousness.

Spotting the warning signs

Internet addiction is widely described as an impulse control disorder, but the fundamental difference is that it does not involve the use of drugs or alcohol, although the symptoms of internet addiction come alarmingly close to the traits displayed by someone with a severe gambling problem.

It has been found that some people with an internet addiction will develop an emotional attachment to the online world they have created through various activities such as using chat rooms to communicate with others.

Nothing wrong with socializing with others online of course, but it is when you can’t stop checking their status and find yourself unable to walk away and do something else that there is a potential addiction problem.

Other people with a potential addiction problem might spend countless hours researching topics of interest or just finding activities that they find hard to break away from once they start.

An unhealthy preoccupation with the internet is a clear warning sign, as is when you find yourself increasing your internet time in order to try and achieve a certain level of satisfaction, spending longer online than you originally intended to spend.

If you find yourself becoming restless or irritable when you can’t spend time on the internet and you are shutting out personal and family relationships in favor of internet use, these are all clear signs of an addiction problem.

An internet addiction can also cause a number of medical problems too, such as dry eyes, severe headaches, and even Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Staring at a screen is something that many of us do for hours each day as part of our daily personal life and work routine, but being able to take a break and do something else is something we should all be capable of doing.

It’s when you can’t do that willingly that might be an addiction problem.

Attribution: Comparitech

Safaricom’s Spark Fund Invests in M-Learning Startup

Juliet

Eneza Media

enezaeducation

mobiletechnology

Press Release

safaricom

Spark Venture Fund

technology

Press Release: Nairobi, Kenya – October 5th, 2016… Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has today announced an investment in Eneza Education through its $1 million Safaricom Spark Venture Fund. Eneza Education provides mobile-based education tools for primary students.

The company was co-founded four years ago by Kago Kagichiri and Toni Maraviglia, who believed in the opportunity that Kenya’s expanding mobile ecosystem could provide for children who needed reliable exam revision tools.

Today, Eneza has more than 1.1 million learners across 11 countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, Zambia, South Africa, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Benin and Iraq.

In a first partnership with Safaricom four years ago, Eneza developed the Shupavu 291 app, which is an affordable, SMS based exam revision and learning solution.

“We believe in the power of the mobile phone in extending access to learners so they can realize their full potential. The additional investment will go a long way in enabling us reach more learners in countries where we already operate in, and in expanding to more countries,” said Kago Kagichiri, CEO, Eneza Education.

As one of its most popular solutions, the Shupavu platform offers a personalized experience by providing real-time course level progress, interactive lessons and assessments, all via the simplest of mobile phones.

Users can access locally-designed tutorials, as well as chat live with a teacher either through a live teacher chat through either USSD or SMS, an online web app, an offline desktop app, or an Android app.

Eneza has also created interactive content to cover the local curriculum in several countries. In Kenya, learners have access to all subjects from Class 4 to Form 4 in the 8-4-4 curriculum, with courses designed to also cater for learners who have dropped out of school but would like to keep learning.

“We believe that the mobile phone has the power to exponentially increase access to critical services such as education. Our partnership with Eneza has already seen us transform the lives of several children in Kenya; the funding we are unveiling today through the Spark Fund will provide them with the money they need to reach more children across the world,” said Bob Collymore, CEO, Safaricom.

Over the last four years, 90 million messages have been sent on the Shupavu 291 platform, with more than 14 million questions completed by learners.

The Safaricom Spark Venture Fund invests in startups by purchasing minority equity stake or providing convertible debt, allowing young businesses to access the finances coupled with the technical advisory and business development services needed to grow their businesses. The fund’s first investment was in Sendy, a fast growing provider of on-demand, door to door delivery and transportation services.

Recently, the Fund announced its second investment in mSurvey, a mobile-first research platform leveraging SMS and mobile messaging technology to simplify access to credible, on-demand data from the emerging world.

…Ends…

Teaching good handwriting skills in the digital age

Juliet

Edtech Posts

edtech

Hand Writing

Juliet Otieno

Mobile Learning

mobiletechnology

Rewards

teaching strategies

technology

Technology is bound to continue developing. Nowadays, everything has been digitized including learning. Kenya has not been left out of the technology revolution. What with the introduction of the Digital Literacy program to schools.

This fact prompts many fears, one of them being the extinction of good handwriting. We were having a conversation with friends who happen to be lecturers, about students’ poor handwriting. Some students write in a way that makes it impossible to read what they have put on paper, making it impossible to grade them. Some fail their exams, not because they did not know the answers, but due to their poor writing.

Here are a few tips to teachers when it comes to teaching good hand writing skills to their students.

Timeliness– The earlier good writing habits are instilled the better. Children should be taught how to write right from an early age. This is kindergarten. If you don’t insist on clear writing at this stage, then it would be an uphill task developing the habit at a later stage.

Tight grip– The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb. Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index and middle fingers. Some people have bad writing because they do not hold their pens correctly.

Try fun writing games– Writing can be fun, for example, your class can have role plays as actors giving their autographs or doctors writing prescriptions. You can get as creative as possible with your class depending on their age. This way, you will develop a habit of good writing.

Tracing Tokens– You may even introduce a reward system for the best or the most improved writing. This will motivate your students to be better writers. The reward system may be as simple as pinning the best written essay on the board for everyone to read. It might even be in form of a pen as a souvenir.

Take time off tech– Technology is great, but every student must get back to the basics. In this age of texts and Facebook, maybe a little letter writing for fun can remind students of their good writing skills.

All these are good ideas that need the dedication of a teacher or parent. There are other ideas out there. Feel free to share them in the comments section.

About the writer

Juliet Otieno is the Brand and Social Media Associate at Eneza Education. The tech-world is fast evolving with innovations hitting the markets day in day out. Learning technological tools continue to dominate the education arena in the universe as developers spend sleepless nights working on the most efficient and result oriented platforms. Education applications and software is the current order of society. The use of more robust tools like smart phones and iPads is taking the world by storm.

Online learning is increasingly becoming an appealing way of studying. Online bookstores, libraries and the web are currently the dominant sources of information. Education enthusiasts have a smoother time in accessing reading materials as opposed to perusing through bulky novels, literature, religious or educational books. Google books and Amazon now command the largest market share in trading on online books. This shows that the digital revolution is on its take off. I foresee a world without physical books in a near future as soon as 20 years from now. Every person should strive towards such a lovely world without destruction of forests, as this would save the environment a great deal.

Technology is a tireless teacher in that students can access it at any time thus making it reliable and convenient. Individualized feedback to students is the key for any successful technology. This feedback gives automatic corrections to pupils hence saving on time. At the same time, every learner gets the necessary attention that a classroom teacher would have otherwise taken 10 times more to attend to each learner. An example is MPrep’s revision platform whereby students get individualized feedback for quizzes. Students can therefore know the correct answers without consulting anybody. Furthermore, MPrep’s platform has thousands of quizzes tailor made for the Kenyan curriculum. The revision tool also helps in providing accurate analytics, it grades students automatically hence helping them improve on performance.

Technology encourages an active rather than a passive participation of students. It promotes good health, for example, use of white boards eliminates the use of chalk, which is a major cause of respiratory diseases. Through DVDs, online mode and through other multimedia tools, creation of lesson plans and saving of notes becomes a simple task. To add to that, distance learning is encouraged hence improving productivity while lowering the cost of education.

Take this to the bank, “Truth be told, our daily lives cannot go on without technology in the current age.” The world now lives, eats and drinks Technology.

By Timothy Keter
